NXP LPC2129FBD64 MCU Program Data Cracking

The LPC2129FBD64 pairs the 256 kilobyte array with two CAN controllers, sixteen kilobytes of SRAM and a 60 MHz ARM7TDMI-S core, in a 64-pin LQFP that gives away nothing about what is inside. It is the part chosen when a node has to hold a substantial program and still behave on a shared bus, which describes a large share of the machinery built between 2004 and 2012.

Cracking one of these in the useful sense means recovering the program and the data it depends on: the constants in flash, the calibration that was written at end of line, and the identities the node puts on the bus. Two of those live in the same array and come out together. The third has to be reconstructed from behaviour.

Why the large array makes the boundary expensive

With read protection active, the only ISP operation still accepted is a full erase of all user sectors. On a 32 kilobyte device that is a nuisance. On this part it means 256 kilobytes of program and parameters are gone in one command, and there is no way to issue it selectively. Any procedure that relies on erasing around the protected region is therefore off the table from the first second.

The remaining routes do not involve the bootloader. Either code runs inside the device and reads the array from within, or the array is read physically after the package is opened. Both are chosen on evidence, and the evidence is collected at reset before any write.

Reading the level, not guessing it

The setting sits in the word at 0x0000_01FC and is applied by the bootloader at every reset. Three things distinguish the levels in practice: whether the debug port connects, whether the ISP handler accepts a jump into RAM, and whether Read Memory returns data or a defined refusal. Those three observations take minutes and identify the state exactly.

What they do not tell you is how the program uses the array. For that the recovered image has to be walked: the vector table, the reset handler, the CAN initialisation, and the tables that hold identifiers and timing. Where the node was never commissioned in front of us, those tables are also the only record of how the original integrator configured it. A node’s bus behaviour is written in those tables, which is why the static analysis and the traffic capture are done together.

Recovery on this device

  1. Capture the node’s traffic on a live bus and note identifiers, cycle times and error recovery.
  2. Establish the protection level from reset behaviour and command refusals, with the flash untouched.
  3. If RAM execution is open, load a reader and pull the array in blocks that follow the real eight and sixty-four kilobyte boundaries.
  4. If not, decapsulate, locate the array and its correction bytes, and read with the ECC association preserved.
  5. Rebuild the vector table and the checksum at 0x0000_0014, then verify on a substitute part.
  6. Walk the recovered image for CAN bit timing, acceptance filters and identifier tables, and check them against the traffic log.

Deliverables

A HEX file, a binary, a sector map that separates the uniform region from the large-sector region, and a short written analysis of the bus-facing configuration found in the code. That last document is often the reason the job was commissioned: it explains a node’s behaviour without requiring the original source. Method notes are on the MCU crack service page, and physical access is covered under chip reverse engineering service.

Shipment details

A photograph of the marking, the crystal, the transceiver in use, and whether the node still communicates. If two nodes have to be matched, send both, because comparing two live logs resolves ambiguities that a single log leaves open. The single-controller version of the same array is treated for LPC2124FBD64, the four-controller part for LPC2194HBD64, and the smaller two-controller device under LPC2119FBD64.

Authorisation

Cracking here means recovering a program for maintenance and analysis on equipment the customer owns or is contracted to service, and that standing is confirmed in writing first. The results are not used to build a competing product, and requests that would require that are refused. The reasoning is kept with the job so the position is clear to anyone who reads the file later. General terms are on the firmware extraction service page.
